Charlestown Veterans'
History Project

Contact Bill Durette at 617-595-7803 for an appointment to see the exhibit of memorabilia maintained at 20 City Square in Charlestown.
The Exhibit is also usually open one Saturday a month, and advance notice is provided in the Charlestown Patriot-Bridge.
In 2005, a military history committee was formed to
gather information on Charlestown veterans who served in our nation's
conflicts. The committee has been focusing on WWII and is in the
process of researching information on those who served during WWII, and
those serviceman who were killed. Charlestown has a long history of men
serving in the military and WWII was a great example of that, as
hundreds of men went off to war and fought in every major battle of
WWII. The town was hugely impacted by the war with nearly every man in
uniform and in many cases whole families serving. Charlestown lost 91
men and women during WWII with more than one man from the same regiment
being killed.
Photo at right is of William Fitzgibbons, 49 Pleasant St, receiving the
Silver Star for his actions during the Battle of Normandy.
There's an ongoing effort to locate living veterans and families of those servicemen who served in WWII. We would like to hear from anybody who can provide us information and pictures of WWII veterans to add to the exhibits.
If anybody would like to help out or participate in the research please
